Camila and Lauren will share their book and the beautiful story behind Tolita. “Tolita: The Best Bad Dog” is a story about a mischievous but lovable rescue dog, Tolita, her two moms and human sister, Sofia. Through a humorous and sweet story based on their real-life Tolita, Sofia learns about acceptance and the commitment of owning a dog. The authors hope their book helps break the expectation that only dogs that fit a standard of behavior created by modern society deserve to be rescued and have a family. While the narrative is particularly relevant to those who have adopted rescue dogs, the overarching themes of acceptance and responsibility extend universally to both animals and humans alike. Furthermore, the authors take pride in presenting a narrative featuring a two-mom family, with a deliberate emphasis on its representation beyond the confines of the LGBTQ+ community. Lauren and Camila adopted Tolita from the Midwest Animal Rescue & Services (MARS) organization, bringing her home on New Year’s Eve 2014. We are pleased to be partnering with MARS for this event. Books and stuffed animals will be available for "adoption" at the event with 20% of proceeds going to MARS. Midwest Animal Rescue & Services (MARS) is committed to serving both pet and parent, finding homes for animals who were once lost, left behind or forgotten, through connecting, healing, and empowering our community.
